REVIEW

I really had no idea what to expect when I started reading this book. I had never read a “steam punk” adventure novel. I was transported to another world by descriptions of underwater cities, boats that travel the sky, and the many creatures that inhabit that world. The main character Synn is very likable. He is brave, strong, and does what is right, not what is easy. He is captured and brought to Sky City. Their queen, Nix, makes it her mission to make Synn hers, which she does viciously. He escapes with the assistance of his friends and gets back to his mother’s city. There, he learns to use his very powerful Mark and plans are made to bring down the evil Hands, who rule mercilessly. Synn is on a path on self-discovery, to find out just what it takes to be the leader he is meant to be. His life is not turning out how he thought.
This book is full of action, adventure, and even a little humor. It was enjoyable to read as the plot moved along and kept me interested. The fantastic imagery really made me want to go there and hang out with these characters. Well, except for Nix; she was pretty scary!
I am looking forward to the next book in this series so I can see what adventures Synn and his friends encounter as they fight for freedom.
I think a nice bold wine like a Cabernet Sauvignon goes well with this book. Bold like Synn.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are mine.

My review:

The King Series

Fearless(book one)

In the first book of this paranormal young adult series, we are introduced to Tasmyn, a high school student who can read minds. Her unique gift causes her and her parents to move quite a bit so she has lead a very sheltered and lonely life. They have just moved to King, Florida . At school, she meets Michael and it is love at first sight (luckily for both of them). For the first time in her life, Tasmyn makes friends. Unfortunately, she also attracts the attention of a group of mean girls who are dabbling in witchcraft, with the help of a teacher. She must use her gifts and summon her bravery to survive their plans. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to read minds…and fall in love, check out this fabulous book!

Breathless (book two)

This book will leave you breathless! Tasmyn is without Michael because he is now away at college. She also meets Rafe, a boy with his own unique gifts. She is forced to work with the teacher whose witchcraft teaching almost killed her in the last book. And there is a preacher who suspects what she can do and believes she is evil. Tasmyn makes decisions to hide her activities from her parents and Michael. This book is fast paced and ends with a Tasmyn once again in a perilous situation from which she must escape.

Restless (book three)

This was my favorite book of the series. It is much darker than the first two. She distances herself from her boyfriend and gets involved with Rafe, who is part of a King family. She begins working with the teacher on how to use her talents. These abilities are more than just the mind-reading! We also learn more about Rafe’s family and King. I loved all the magic in this book and the action towards the end as she must get away from her dangerous teacher for good.

Endless (book four)

And so it ends…in this book, Tasmyn and Michael are together and away at college. She is recruited by an organization where she (and her parents) think she can use her gift for good. She has her doubts and should have listened to her intuition! She gets involved in a murder investigation and comes face-to-face with the father of the girl who tried to kill her in the first book. The end has lots of action and a twist. Love the way the author ties up the series although sad to see it end.

This paranormal series has romance and action and can be enjoyed by young adults and adults alike. If you are over 21, I suggest a nice Riesling to go with it. 🙂

What was the first book you remember reading?

Notice: Trying to access array offset on value of type bool in /home5/thewiney/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 523

The first book I remember reading is ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. I didn’t actually read it; I had memorized it after having my mom read it to me. Repeatedly. What is a sugar plum anyway?
During my grammar school years, I lived within walking distance of the library. My summers were spent going there and checking out as many book as I could; I think it was six. Remember Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret ? I loved reading biographies like Susan B. Anthony and Clara Barton. Just reading for the fun of it.
In high school, there was required reading. I actually read some of these again as an adult, very different perspective. But we had to read them and write papers about them and talk about them and take tests on them, which took some of the fun out of it for me.
In college, I majored in French so many of the books I read were in French. Madame Bovary, No Exit, and many others I barely remember now…so long ago.
Then, I had kids. And I read to them a lot. Love you Forever, Where the Wild Things Are, Goodnight Moon, On the Night You were Born. And we loved anything by Eric Carle. Adored this stage. In fact, I now try to give a book with a baby shower gift.
And then the magic happened. They learned to read. And it was wonderful. When my daughter was in third grade, we read the Narnia series. Loved it! And then, she decided to read the first Harry Potter book. Ugh! I didn’t read everything she read of course, but I was thinking I should read this. But I really didn’t want to; I mean wizards? Yuck. But I did (in the name of being a good parent). And of course, I was hooked. At that point, the first five movies were out. We would finish a book and then borrow the movie from the library. When the last three movies were released, we were there on opening day.
And so began my love of book series. I read Twilight, Hunger Games, and Outlander among others. Absolutely adored reading one after the other; finishing one and moving on to the next.
And then a friend wrote a young adult book that was to be the first in a series. And she self-published it. And I read it and loved it and have now read the whole series. It is the King series about a girl who can read minds. The fourth and final book in the series recently came out. This made me interested in seeing what other great indie books are out there. And so my adventure begins….
