Review:

Absolutely loved this book! After an attention grabbing prologue, this book never stops. It starts off with college girls going out for a fun time (I remember those days, sort of) and then takes off from there.
The author has created quite a cast of characters. I love how you get to meet them all and get to know them in due time. The main character has flaws of course but she is strong and gets through with help from her friends. This makes her so relatable to me, she is like someone I could have known. I want to be friends with her and her friends, they are a fun and supportive group. And of course being introduced to a group of werewolves is always interesting. Their way of life, the hierarchy of the pack made for fascinating reading. I loved how the author explained how this group came to be; the story of their ancestry was also woven into the story.Another thing I liked was the setting, a college town up north. Being a northerner by birth, I could really connect to the place. The descriptions of the homes, the woods, and the cold weather (reminding me why I moved south) were all reminiscent of where I grew up.
The paranormal aspect was fresh and new which is hard to do now. There are so many out there. But the author puts her own spin on it and while I won’t give away spoilers, it was entertaining and fun to read. The author did a fabulous job moving the reader along, there were no dull spots and she kept me guessing as to what would happen next. Almost everyone she is close to becomes involved in the story.
The ending is making me want more and to know what happens next in this adventure and I am hoping she doesn’t leave me waiting long. If you are a paranormal fan, you will want to read this book….and if you are not, this book will make you one!
This is definitely a red wine book. Whatever kind you like, I enjoyed a Cabernet Sauvignon with this one.

The Posse by Tawdra Kandle -Book Tour & Review

The Posse

Being a widow at the age of forty-four was never in Jude Hawthorne’s plans. After her husband’s death, she’s left with her family’s beach restaurant and two nearly-grown children. The last thing she’s looking for is another chance at love.
However, if her husband’s best friends, the Posse, have anything to say about it, love is just what she’s going to get. The Posse is determined to take care of Jude, and when they decide the best way to do that is for one of them to sweep her off her feet, three begin to vie for her affections. But only one can reach her heart.

In a story of friendship, loss and second chances, Jude will learn her life is far from being over.
My review:

The Posse is the first adult novel written by the author. She has a YA series out already that I loved. Her first adult short story appears in Eternal Summer, an anthology.
The Posse is set in a fictional small town on the east coast of Florida. It centers on Jude, a widow whose children are about to go back to their lives a year after their father died. Now Jude must begin her new life.
So she does. But not without some problems along the way. And did I mention 3 hot guys? Three of her late husband’s friends decide to woo her. I won’t give any spoilers here of course but the ride on the way to her decision is full of laughter and tears.
I loved how Jude is a middle aged woman, and appreciated the references to 80’s music which is from my time. The idea of second chances, a strong woman, and moving on with life were all themes in this well-written story. I could see this quaint little town in my head, and all the fun characters. Like the 3 hot guys. Sensing a theme here?
Loved the romance in this book. These are men that know how to court a woman. Dinners, dancing, and just knowing how a woman likes to be treated. This book transported me, had me laughing, and crying tears of joy by the end. These characters are so well defined, I felt like I knew them and wanted to hang out with them.
The adult characters are all strong. These are not teenagers or young adults finding their way in life. I could really identify with that and made the story more plausible for me. They were real, flawed people who had lived and had experiences similar to me and people I know.
So if you like romance, a great story, and 3 hot guys, go get this book! Now!
I enjoyed a nice chilled Riesling with this…but am now craving some limoncello!

Wilted Wings by Shadow Stephens – Review

Notice: Trying to access array offset on value of type bool in /home5/thewiney/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 523

Wilted WingsWilted Wings

Power, greed, and envy fill Damon and Ilisha’s world. Their hope of settling into a life of peace and family remains out of grasp. Damon is kidnapped and forced to stand trial for the death of his father while a breed of hybrids designed to destroy all angels is set loose. With no choice but to leave her earthly mother and baby behind, Ilisha struggles in a world of high politics and family feuds. She must become an ultimate warrior to save her husband and both the worlds she loves.

Review:

Wilted Wings is the second book in the series and I recommend reading Broken Butterflies (book one) prior to reading this one. In book two, the main characters are angels living here on earth raising the human baby of Ilisha’s late friend and her husband.
This book tells the story of how Ilisha and Damon must return to their kingdoms in order to fight the demons infiltrating earth. The author does a fabulous job of describing the different kingdoms. I really felt like I could “see” them. We are also introduced to new characters there. It was fun to meet the angels there and find out how they figured into Ilisha’s and Damon’s story. I loved the pace of this book; there is lots of action as they battle and discover who is behind what is happening on earth.
Back on earth, the action continues. The demons are wreaking havoc here and I enjoyed how the author shows humankind reacting to the chaos. I don’t want to give anything away, but the author does tie most everything up nicely but I could see that this may not be the end of their story.
I liked how the author has developed Ilisha into a strong character, who is brave and smart. She knows what must be done and isn’t afraid to do it. In the first book, she is just discovering who she is; in this one she really comes into her own.
Now, on to the steamy scenes. These are plentiful and descriptive. If you like reading hot sex scenes, you won’t be disappointed!
I would recommend a Merlot with this book…strong like Ilisha!

All for Hope by Olivia Hardin – Review

Notice: Trying to access array offset on value of type bool in /home5/thewiney/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 523

All of Hope

To protect her heart, he left her behind.

To protect her life, he’ll leave the life he’s made behind.
Sometimes the safest distance between two hearts is no distance at all…

Kidnapping a baby wasn’t something Hope ever dreamed she would do. But she’s been burned by the legal system before, so when the court places her friend’s child into the custody of an abuser, she takes matters into her own hands. She steals the baby and fakes her death, hoping to make a clean getaway. She planned every detail, except one.

Her high school sweetheart and best friend, who left her years before, sees her at a gas station. Hope thinks all is lost, until he offers to help them.

Brennan had always been the love of Hope’s life, but he never wanted to be. She knows she cannot depend on him for long. However, as each day passes, it becomes painfully obvious that she is in way over her head. She goes with him, intending to keep him always an arm’s length away to protect her heart. But being on the run together sparks the old flames that once burned between Brennan and Hope.

Families, friends, and lovers must band together to save an innocent baby and a daring woman or both of their lives will be destroyed. Together, they’ll do it All for Hope…

Review:

This is a great read…just perfect for a summer day at the beach.  It opens with Hope meeting secretly with a friend and you don’t know quite what she is up to, but you soon find out.  The author brings you on an adventure and the pace keeps you reading until you see what happens.  She is on the run with a baby and an old flame ends up joining forces with her.

I love a romance and especially when the heroine finally gets the man of her dreams.  One of the aspects I enjoyed was the notion of second chances.  She really believes in the good in people and is able to trust them even after being hurt.  Bren has to prove he is worthy of it though.  She doesn’t just take him back.

Hope was a character who made me want to be a better person. She was so selfless in sacrificing everything to help someone else. I honestly don’t know if I could have done what she did, although I wish I could.  Bren also takes a chance in helping her…at first because he thinks he owes her for his actions in the past, but eventually he comes to discover it’s more than that. I loved that he was on a journey too, to figure out who he should be and how to be happy.

The characters are well-developed and I really liked most of them.  Of course, I did not like the bad guy.  The author paints a pretty vivid picture of him and when Hope sees him face to face, I felt contempt for him.  The varied cast of characters shows flaws, loyalty, and faith…just like real life.

Another part I really loved was the strong sense of family and what that really means.  To be part of a family is a very important aspect of this book and in part, a reason that shows Bren where he should be and wants to be.

This is a well-paced book that will keep you reading until the very last chapter and rooting for Hope.  I highly recommend it and a nice chilled pinot grigio goes along well with it.  That is one of my favorite summer drinks and this is perfect for it!

About the Author – Olivia Hardin realized early on how strange she was to have complete movie-like character dreams as a child. Eventually she began putting those vivid dreams to paper and was rarely without her spiral notebooks full of those mental ramblings. Her forgotten vision of becoming an author was realized when she connected with a group of amazingly talented and fabulous writers who gave her lots of direction and encouragement. With a little extra push from family and friends, she hunkered down to get lost in the words. She’s also an insatiable crafter who only completes about 1 out of 5 projects, a jogger who hates to run, and is sometimes accused of being artistic, though she’s generally too much of a perfectionist to appreciate her own work. A native Texas girl, Olivia lives in the beautiful Lone Star state with her husband and their puppy Bonnie.

Review of The Emerald Tablet by Joshua Silverman

Notice: Trying to access array offset on value of type bool in /home5/thewiney/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 523

The Emerald TabletGenre: Sci-Fi, Fantasy

Leoros doesn’t have many friends. The son of a scientist and archeologist, he is constantly on the move. But when his parents make a startling discovery in Egypt, Leoros’ world is turned upside down.

Do you wish you could have the power of a god? Would you use it for good…or for evil?

When an archaeologist discovers the mythic Emerald Tablet buried beneath Egypt’s desert, her son decodes the ancient text leading him to a distant world.

On that world, a slave girl begins a journey towards a destiny she cannot imagine. But when an ancient foe rises from the ashes, they will be brought together by forces neither understands.

Leoros, who dreams of being like the heroes in the comic books, must fight to unlock the secrets of the universe to save a people he never knew existed.

Atlantia, whose bloody visions wake her in the night, senses the darkness coming.

Together they will face an enemy with the power of dark energy, lose a mentor to the assassin’s blade, and be betrayed by someone they trust. Their fight for the future is just beginning, and before it is over, a final sacrifice must be made. When the darkness comes, will they stand and fight or will they join it?

There is darkness in everyone.

My review:

I was really looking forward to this book.  It has a beautiful cover and what’s not to like about good vs evil fantasy?

The story was a little difficult for me to get into at first. We finally meet the hero of the story, Leoros, several chapters into the book.  The author begins with the back stories of how this world was created.  And while it is very descriptive, it does get a bit confusing and I found myself having to re-read some of it so I could fully understand.

Once Leoros uses the Emerald Tablet to travel from modern-time Egypt to this other planet, things become clearer.  And about half-way into the book,  the battle between good and evil begins. The action was well-paced and kept me interested and wanting to see what would happen next.  I also enjoyed how the author shows the evil and how they are able to convince others into believing they are actually the good ones.  At some points, you really don’t know who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.

There are many memorable characters throughout this book and the author has certainly done his homework in regards to Greek and Egyptian mythology and history.  And although the main character is 13, this is not what I would characterize as young adult; there are several scenes not appropriate for younger teens.

Overall, I liked this book and can see the potential as this series progresses. Since this is the first book, we are sure to see Leoros’ character develop further. There are so many really great characters about who I would like to learn more.   I have the feeling that this first book is just the start for Leoros and his true destiny.

I didn’t really drink much wine with this book as I needed a clear head to follow it,  but afterwards, a lovely Shiraz was very nice as I mulled over the adventure I had just read.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.  The opinions expressed are mine.
