TheBimboSyndicateBannerbimbosydicateSaxon, Ming and Heba, glamorous girlfriends of three ruthless power brokers in the international oil industry, become instant friends over a broken zipper in the ladies’ room of a five-star Paris hotel during an OPEC conference. They don’t realize they’ve been set up. Nor that they’re being stalked by a sexy young assassin on the payroll of Ming’s tough old billionaire Chinese banker. He’s competing with Saxon’s charming but wily Washington lobbyist and Heba’s gorgeous but sinister Saudi Prince for the Grand Prize. Control of the world’s oil supply. Rumors abound that their precious Light Sweet Crude is running out, and only an elusive genius scientist, Doctor Hilda Lobinski, knows the facts. When the three smart career women catch on to the cunning plot they dub themselves The Bimbo Syndicate and set up their own agenda. Things go wrong. Pulling all their strings from his lonely exile is a former White House insider with his eyes on the money and a gruesome plan to grab it all. It’s election year 2000, the atmosphere is heating up with the excitement of shifting powers and the deployment of dirty tricks. But the big movers know there’s more to it than just getting elected, it’s where the oil is that has their attention. And whoever owns the oil owns the world.

Interview:

Who do you think would most enjoy reading your book and why.

People who’ve been aware of the extraordinary and inescapable power of oil across the world long enough to enjoy the fiction of it suddenly not being here to exploit. People who’ve not yet considered how much of our lives and social structure that we’re used to and take for granted would just collapse if oil vanished. I want to provoke readers to see how much the actual events of desperate drilling, fracking, wars, tribal conflicts and power shifts reveal that bad news about oil is on the way.

And readers who enjoy a fun plot full of surprises and unexpected characters.

How did you come up with names and characters? Are any based on real people?

I love making up names, I get clues for the names from how I see the people – Saxon is Nordic, and Ming goes with her antiques. A friend gave me the name I.Beam – she’s the strong structure who holds up the many plots. In this novel I invented characters to work for me as the plot developed.

There are no characters in The Bimbo Syndicate based on real people, though there’s a vague salute to an old Agency legend, and I admit that Waldo is a bit like The X-Files’ Mulder. It’s all fiction.

Are you planning any more books?

Yes, my next novel is in its final edit. It goes beyond The Bimbo Syndicate to a time when the oil and everything dependent on it have long gone, and a group of contented survivors are threatened by a newcomer who wants to bring the old life back.

How did you research for your book?

The Bimbo Syndicate developed from years of observation and intriguing information about the world of oil. Maybe from catching a glimpse of King Faisal of Saudi Arabia in London, then traveling through the Suez Canal, and meeting some Saudis during the World Cup in Los Angeles -, and reading the news and watching it on TV all the time.

Best thing about being an author.

I enjoy making up stories and getting carried away with the action, once I’ve worked out the plot. I’ve been in the movie business most of my life so I’ve had plenty of inspiration.

Favorite movie. When did you see it and who with?

“Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” – I’ve seen it twice or more, and still can’t resist it. I saw it on my own – my favorite way of watching movies – on my personal DVD player with headphones.

A character from a book you would like to vacation with…where would you go.

Thomas Cromwell in Hilary Mantel’s two novels – Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies – what a mind. If I could transport him through time I would choose St. Paul de Vence, in the South of France, so we could enjoy my favorite food and wine and hear more about that intense historical period.

Favorite book as a child.

Enid Blyton’s “The Magic Faraway Tree” which epitomized escape for me at a time when I needed it.

A word you think should be banished.

“Absolutely” – and could I also throw in “Amazing”? They were once good words that have been ruined and diminished by over use.

Hardest chapter or scene to write. Favorite scene.

Hardest scene to write was getting Jack O’Rourke to blow his cool completely when he finally meets the rock and roll band.

Favorite scene to write was Heba suddenly experiencing how dead serious Abdul is about his mission – after blowing it with her computer tricks.

Name an author you would like to be your mentor.

Gore Vidal. Well, he actually was my mentor and I remember his words so often.

About the author:

Maggie Abbott started writing novels when she moved to Palm Springs after a long, successful show business career in Los Angeles, London, Rome, and New York.

A casual job as a secretary at the William Morris Agency in Rome introduced her to the exciting scene of Cleopatra, Fellini’s 8½ and The Pink Panther, with the city’s influx of big stars calling by the office every day, and triggered her lifelong love affair with movies.

Over the years, Maggie has enjoyed being in the most interesting places at the best of their times, while working as the movie agent for some exciting stars: Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Charlotte Rampling, Jacqueline Bisset, Martin Sheen, Raquel Welch, Christopher Plummer, Robert Redford, Mia Farrow, Peter Sellers, Richard Chamberlain, Peter O’Toole, Britt Ekland, Ken Russell, John Boorman, and many more.

Somewhere in between, Maggie was the production assistant on three Broadway plays, and a producer and studio executive at Columbia Pictures where she developed and got production credits on two movies.
