fighting silence ebook cover
Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it’s the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I’ve always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine. I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn’t a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.

You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.

They both happened anyway.

Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.
Fighting for my career.
Fighting the impending silence.
Fighting for her.

Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that’s the sound I’ll miss the most.

FIGHTING SILENCE Cover Reveal Excerpt

“That wasn’t yours to take away,” he exploded into the otherwise silent night. His words echoed off the surrounding buildings, each wave slicing me to the quick all over again. “That was our place. Not yours.” His voice cracked right alongside my heart.
“Yeah, well, there was a lot of stuff that wasn’t yours to take either.” I held his gaze, desperately trying to be strong, but as his eyes grew wide, I whimpered.
His long legs strode forward, stopping only inches away from me. He was crowding me, but he still leaned in closer to my face.

“There is nothing in this world that was ever more mine than you,” he stated. Though it was the absolute truth, I wished with all my heart that it were a lie.
“Till,” I cried, swiping the tears from my eyes.
“Why!” he shouted, causing his muscles to tense under the force. “Goddamn it! I needed that place.”
Porch lights flashed on from the surrounding apartments, illuminating not only the dark but also my rage.
I shoved my hands into his chest. “What about what I needed? You left! I waited in that fucking apartment for weeks.”
He didn’t budge, but my bare feet slipped, sending me toward the ground. Impossibly fast, Till’s hand snaked out and caught my arm. I didn’t let his chivalrous gesture douse my fire. I had six months’ worth of words to say to the man I was irrevocably in love with.

“You took what you wanted. Then you left me.”
“Doodle,” he whispered.

I had been perilously close to the edge of insanity, and with one single word, he’d pushed me over.

I lost it completely.

Pounding my fists against his chest, I screamed at the top of my lungs, “It’s Eliza! My name is fucking Eliza! Not Doodle!” I spun to march away, but Till’s arms folded around me, lifting me off my feet to restrain me.
I was miniscule compared to him. There was no use in fighting, but I still kicked my legs, irrationally desperate to get away from him—but only because I knew I couldn’t keep him for forever.
“Stop it!” he growled into my ear. “I know your Goddamn name—probably better than I know my own.”

Best Served Cold - Tawdra Kandle

Julia worked for weeks planning the perfect surprise birthday party for her boyfriend, Liam, but that night, she was the one who got the biggest shock. He broke up with her in front of all their friends, humiliating her in the process.

Clearly revenge was in order.

The plan is simple. Make him jealous, win him back, and then crush his heart. Fair is fair. However, there is one little hiccup, and he has curly brown hair and dimples.

Jesse is everything she wants. With him, she could almost forget her bruised heart. Almost. Julia has one choice: let Liam walk away after everything he did, or lose a chance at love in pursuit of payback.

When her friend Julia needed help forming a revenge plan against her ex-boyfriend, Ava was happy to lend a hand. She never expected that in the course of JustDessertsSWCovermaking Liam pay, she’d be the one to fall hard. . .for the one person who was absolutely off-limits. Crushing on the guy who humiliated her best friend is definitely against the girl code.

Besides, Ava has goals. Her life is all about graduating with honors and landing the perfect job. And Liam Bailey—sweet-talking, complicated son of a well-known local politician—isn’t part of those plans.

But Liam doesn’t give up easily. And he doesn’t intend to let their friends’ opinions, his parents’ disapproval or Ava’s past get in the way of what he wants–Ava’s heart.

I Choose You
The path of true love was a bumpy one for Ava and Liam. He was her best friend’s ex-boyfriend, son of a local politician and the campus playboy. She was a hard-working, single-minded scholarship student with no time for romance. They were the couple least likely to succeed.

But almost two years later, love is better than ever. Liam’s pursuing his dream of being a college professor, and Ava’s the rising star at a local ad agency. But Liam still has one more goal: marrying the girl who changed his life.

Neither of them realizes that making it to the big day might be their greatest challenge yet. Between his parents’ acrimonious divorce and her family’s ideas of how to plan the perfect wedding, it’ll take the strength of their love—and a little help from their friends–to see them through to happily-ever-after.

confessionsbannerConfessions CoverSylva Fleischer is a teenager who works as a necromancer for a living. Wanting to get away from raising the dead for police investigations and demanding grieving families for a while, she goes on a cruise for spring
break. Her vacation from the dead is short-lived when passengers on the ship turn into flesh-eating zombies. These are not the same simple-minded harmless zombies she raises and can control, so Sylva and her friends are
trapped on the Pacific Ocean. Their only escape comes from a guy Sylva thought was dead: Brandon. It just so happens to also be the anniversary of his death, and she’s still hurting from his loss!

Why didn’t he call to say he’s alive? All those tears … for nothing.

Sylva doesn’t normally hold grudges, but when someone plays with her heart they have to pay. However, with the fate of the human race on the line, Brandon convinces Sylva to join him in a secret mission, yet she can’t shake the feeling that he’s hiding something.

It didn’t take long for her suspicions to hold true when it’s revealed that Brandon has been romantically involved with the very enemy he now wants her to destroy. To top that brutal betrayal, the villainous female would rather kill Brandon than let Sylva have a chance to patch things up between them. Sylva is not the kind of girl to walk away from love without a fight, but with a strange virus threatening extinction of human life, she shoves her own feelings in her back pocket to face her greatest nightmare, and that nightmare starts with something that is eerily growing right inside of her own mind and body.

Weird Criminal Law Stories by Leonard Birdsong #Excerpt

365 weird criminal bannerProfesso365 weird criminal law storiesr Birdsong’s Weird 365: Weird Criminal Law Stories for Every day of the Year

This time the professor uses his expertise and experience in criminal law to bring forth his “365,” weird criminal law stories for each day of the year. This is his funniest volume of criminal law stories mostly from around the States to date. This book covers more than a lot of silly and unlawful conduct one could imagine. Full of his witty “Birdsong” commentary and observations the book is sure to deliver some great laughs. There’s a story about the 54-year-old man who attempts to perform an exorcism on his 80-year-old girlfriend to get the devil out of her; a story about a Czech man who uses a chain saw to slice his way back into a restaurant after closing time; a story of an alleged child pornographer caught downloading child porn on his phone while being question at police headquarters; a story about a Tennessee man who had a stroke who thought he was dying confessed to a 1977 murder – he didn’t die and now is facing a murder charge; a “drunken dummy” or two; and a wide variety of just plain, stupid criminals that make this anthology worth reading.

 STORIES FOR JANUARY

JANUARY 1

FLORIDA: The power of Christ commands you! Police in the town of Holiday arrested a 54-year-old man after a fight with his 80-year-old live in girlfriend got out of hand and he attempted to perform an exorcism on her. David Benes held her down and told her he was trying to “get the devil out of her.”

JANUARY 2

CZECH REPUBLIC: Petr Svacha, 26, is facing a possible year in jail after using a chainsaw to slice his way back into a restaurant in the town of Zlin after closing time. Svacha just wanted to finish eating his pudding. Waiters at the restaurant had kicked Svacha out midway through his dessert because the restaurant was closing for the night.Must have been some really good pudding!

JANUARY 3

BRAZIL: Prisoners in Brazil have a new way to win early release – knitting. The cons at Arisvaldo de Campos Pires prison are being allowed to perform work knitting clothes for a local fashion designer. The prisoners get a day shaved off their sentence for every three days of knitting. Do they really want convicts to have knitting needles?

JANUARY 4

FLORIDA: Yep, that’s her story and she is sticking with it. The bomb squad in Jensen Beach was shocked to learn that the suspicious package they were set to dismantle was only a sex toy. “It was a pink plastic adult novelty item, with some type of a plastic rabbit attached to it,” the sheriff told reporters. The woman who received the package maintained she never ordered it.

JANUARY 5

NEW YORK CITY: An ex-marine who plotted to behead Federal Judge Joseph Bianco and a prosecutor – to avenge his Ponzi scheme convicted buddy, sobbed and begged a Brooklyn federal judge to “give him a second chance in life, that’s all I am asking,” he said at sentencing. Judge John Keenan was not moved and sentenced Djevid Mirkovic, 38, to 24 years in prison. An appropriate sentence for plotting to behead a federal judge, crybaby!

JANUARY 6

INDIA: Four men were arrested for trying to smuggle $100,000 in gold into the country – in their stomachs. The men had swallowed a banquet of small gold bars and coins to avoid customs. That’s $25,000 in each of them. Wonder what would’ve happened if one of them had to take a dump?

JANUARY 7

ARIZONA: Police on underage drinking patrol singled out a father at a Cardinals NFL preseason football game that had asked his fifteen year old son to hold his beer while the father took photographs of the action on the field. The police officers kicked the whole family out of the stadium, and state liquor officials said that if they had been stricter, the father could have received two years in jail. OK, some states have just become ridiculous with their anti-alcohol campaigns.

JANUARY 8

NEW MEXICO: A violent woman was arrested after police said she attacked her boyfriend with a boot, a tire iron and a screwdriver – while he was behind the wheel with car moving. The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect is being held in jail on battery charges. The boyfriend must have cheated on her and she found out about it!

JANUARY 9

GEORGIA: a Newton County sheriff’s deputy crossed the line and allegedly started selling marijuana out of his patrol car. Deputy Darrell Mathis allegedly told a pal that he would never be caught because he was police officer. Unfortunately, he was wrong. The pal went to the FBI. There’s a song titled “A Policeman’s Work is Never Done,” but this policeman’s job is certainly finished.

JANUARY 10

OREGON: It was easy for authorities to discover the counterfeit $20 bills that Michael Dietrich allegedly turned out. Why? Well, they all had the same serial number. His lack of imagination was discovered by a gun dealer in the town of Keizer who spotted the duplicate 20’s. This case is even weirder because at the time of Dietrich’s arrest he was the manager of the Oregon State Department of Revenue. Perhaps, he was not paid enough at the Department of Revenue!
