Broken Dolls by BR Kingsolver
Private investigator RB Kendrick makes her living nailing cheating spouses, digging up other dirt to help in a divorce, finding long-lost relatives, and occasionally sniffing out criminal activity and fraud.
When she takes a job to find a missing girl, she has no idea she is headed for the most dangerous case of her career. Usually, her ability to read minds gives her an edge. But when the people she’s hunting are also telepaths, that advantage is limited.
The search takes her into the dark underbelly of telepathic society, where anything, and anyone, is for sale. She discovers that telepathic women and girls are being trafficked as the ultimate sex slaves.
With people trying to kill her, she’s on the run, not knowing who she can trust. Will she find the missing girl, or become a victim herself?
An Introduction to RB Kendrick, Private Investigator
In my new novel, Broken Dolls, RB Kendrick is a 35 year old private investigator living in London. Her parents are an Irish lord of the ancient O’Neill Clan, and a Welsh healer and courtesan. But her father has never acknowledged her, and she traces her heritage through her maternal line.
In spite of growing up outside one of the large Clans, as a teenager RB was able to spend summers with the O’Byrne Clan in County Wicklow, Ireland. At O’Byrne, she received training in her paranormal Gifts as well as paramilitary training in hand-to-hand combat, weapons, and physical fitness. This opportunity was open to her because Lady O’Byrne was her great-aunt.
Lord and Lady O’Byrne also paid for her education at Oxford University, where she studied European languages, history and psychology. She speaks a eight languages and several Gaelic dialects fluently. She also took up rowing, and was a member of the women’s team that competed internationally.
After university, she took a job with Interpol and worked for them for three years. Her ability with languages and her training at O’Byrne helped her to move into a position as a field agent, often doing undercover work. It all came crashing down one night in Prague, Czech Republic, when her partner was killed and she barely escaped with her life. Seriously wounded, she managed to survive, but the experience caused her to leave Interpol and move to London where she became a licensed private investigator.
In addition to her telepathic Gifts, RB has other traits that make her successful. Tall, flame-haired, green-eyed and beautiful, she’s not shy of using her looks to get what she wants. She isn’t vain, and usually dresses in a sweater and jeans, with no makeup and her hair in a braid. But she knows how to dress to catch attention when she needs to.
When RB was in high school in Wales, her given name of Rhiannon Bronwyn drew such teasing that she began only using her initials. In Welsh, her name means “maiden of the white hills”. When her mother picked a name, she never expected her daughter would be so spectacularly endowed.
In spite of her athletic prowess, RB is a klutz. Whether stepping in a hole because she isn’t looking where she’s going, or tripping over a hem because she forgets to hold her skirt while traversing stairs, she’s a disaster waiting to happen. Luckily, she has a number of telepathic Healers in her life.
But what makes RB special is her ethics and devotion to justice. Her conscience keeps her from abusing her powers, and her compassion makes her want to help people in trouble. Confronted with a network of telepaths who are enslaving young women and selling them as sex slaves, she throws herself into disrupting their operations. But even her closest friends and relatives are constantly holding their breath, as she skirts disaster and death with blithe obliviousness. RB’s phenomenal luck leads one character to wonder, is there a 26th Gift?

About the Author:
I made silver and turquoise jewelry for almost a decade, ended up in nursing school, then took a master’s in business. Along the way I worked in construction, as a newspaper editor, and somehow found a career working with computers.
I love the outdoors, especially the Rocky Mountains. I’ve skied since high school, with one broken leg and one torn ACL to show for it. I’ve hiked and camped all my life. I love to travel, though I haven’t done enough of it. I’ve seen a lot of Russia and Mexico, not enough of England and France. Amsterdam is amazing, and the Romanian Alps are breathtaking. Lake Tahoe is a favorite.
I have a very significant other, two cats and two Basset Hounds. I’m currently living in Baltimore, nine blocks from the harbor, but still own a home in New Mexico.
