Besides, Maximillian smelled familiar, like deep forest and pine needles baked in the sun mixed with that chilly snap of running water and the coolness of twilight. Those things have a smell that adds up to a dream.

I’m excited to announce my debut novel, Forgetting Jane, which comes out June 29^th, 2016. This book had won the 2013 West Houston RWA Emily Award in the Romantic Suspense division.

There are a lot of elements in this book that I have experienced in my youth, and I’ve put them to good use when I wrote this story.

Everything that is new again…..

Life. The way it cycles, can be kind of funny, can’t it? Kids these days are wearing the big thick glasses that I couldn’t wait to get rid of growing up. Bright colors and fashions I was wearing in grade school, are back. I’ve even seen slouch socks and a mean cuffed jean.

Everything cycles. Everything comes back. So heading into the new year, I’m thinking about what trends, fashion, television shows, I’d love to see come back and be new again. Let’s face it, there are few new ideas, thoughts left so why not revisit our past. Yank out an old idea and give it a fresh coat of paint. Right?

• The mini-series is back. Oh sure, Netflix might call it a ‘limited run’ series, but what’s the difference. With Gilmore Girls, and X-files coming back, I want to see Buffy come back. Not a reboot, that’d be too much for my heart to handle. But a continuation. SMG says she’s too old to be Buffy, but no problem. She can be a supervisor to the new slayer. Or, could even be her daughter. Let the ooooing commence! (Don’t talk to me about the comics, I’m pretending those didn’t happen) #PoorGiles #TeamAngel

• Sweet Valley High and the Babysitter Club Books: It’s time to freshen those books up, don’t you think? I loved them growing up, couldn’t wait to be a babysitter, but let’s face it. They are extremely dated. Imagine the Babysitters with their own phone app? Or Jessica Wakefield with an Instagram account, that’d be scary. I bet she’d totally be into creating her own Vines.

• Grunge should make a big comeback. Big. Because what better way to hide that we’re laying around watching Vines, playing on facebook, and watching BuzzFeed recipes expand our hips than grunge? A little grease, some slouching, heck, the flannels are already back in the stores. Let’s just take this one step further, people!

Excerpt:

“My first thought was…vampire.” With the word out of her mouth, she felt like a moron. Vampires? Really?

His gaze roved the small space of the bathroom. “Um, Pea, there are no such things as vampires.”

“Okay. Well, I had to check with you. You know, hunter and all. I thought maybe you might have run into something like this? Werewolves? Vampires?”

“As far as I know, they only exist in bad teen angst books.”

“I read those, thank you very much.” Paige rolled out of the doorway and into the wide, open living room. “And I watch the movies and the TV shows.”

“Oh, your guilty pleasures. Tell me you just want them for the naked men.”

She pursed her lips out and nodded. “Definitely the for the naked men.” She plopped into the white and ragged overstuffed chair.

He gave her a come-hither look and gestured to himself. “And what about this naked man?”

She chuckled. “This half naked man.”

“I could be all the way naked.”

There really was part of her that wanted that.

But the rest of her was just so tied up in the chaos she called a life. She couldn’t unwind enough to relax to fully enjoy the moment.

“Meh.” He waved her off. “I wasn’t going to let you have me anyway.”

As if.

Dexx perched on the arm of one of the chairs, folding his hands between his knees. “There’s something else going on here. Ever since we made it back to your apartment, you’ve, I don’t know, closed off.”

She really didn’t feel like talking about it.

“Okay. You know what? Here’s what we’re going to do.”

Slapping her palms against the arms of the chair, she looked up at him. She was ready to unwind, to do something fun, to get away from the crazy fucking cases she’d been given.

He pulled her to her feet and grabbed her shoulders. “I’m gonna go put on somethin’ perty.”

She laughed quietly. “Prettier’n what you’re already wearin’?”

“Yup. And you’re gonna change into somethin’ that hasn’t visited a crime scene today. Also, you smell like an ashtray. Tell me you didn’t start up again.”

“I didn’t, but I did have a half.”

He pulled a yuk face and shivered dramatically. “Turn off. Anyway, then, you’re taking me to dinner.”

She frowned up at him with a slight smile. “Somehow, I feel that’s all backwards.”

He grinned. “I promote equal rights, and right now, you earn more than I do.”

“You don’t earn anything.”

“Exactly.” He sashayed toward the bedroom. “Green shirt?” He looked at her over his shoulder and batted his eyes, one hand on his hip. “Bring out my eyes?”

That man.
