The Greatest Sensation
All too often we think that power or accomplishment is what drives us – getting the fancy job, a raise, more money, winning, doing something no one else can do. People can seem so driven, so ambitious.
I remember this woman I used to know. Anytime I thought of her, it was usually something like, “That girl isn’t tied down by emotions or romantic thoughts. She has her head on straight and isn’t going to stop for anything.”
Not too long ago I found out that she quit her job and dropped all of her dreams for a husband and a family. She altered who she was as an individual to anchor herself to her true love and her never-voiced dream of children.
That woman?
Is me.
Children were never on my radar because I wanted to be a doctor, President of the USA, an author, a movie director, and I wanted to have seven boyfriends because one just wasn’t enough (no, I wasn’t a dater and hadn’t realized men take more attention than I thought possible).
But I never read ambitious books. I worked my tail off, but when I was reading? I was voraciously caught up in the pages of romances – historicals, paranormals, contemporaries, young adult, you name it! And they all centered on romance, getting the guy, being happy forever. And the happy was always tied up in love.
And when I finally fell in love? I slowed down on reading the romances and turned to thrillers, mysteries, crime books, etc.
My mom asked me once why I didn’t read romances anymore. I pointed out that I still enjoyed them immensely; I just felt like I had so much romance in my life, I didn’t need it anymore.
And I didn’t.
Then I felt the need to start writing romances (along with all my suspense). I like the story around love, because I had such a fun romance too.
When I think about being a doctor again, or going for a crazy hard job or anything that will pull me away from my family longer than I want to be away – I look at my children and my amazing husband and the need isn’t there. I write because I’m happy writing. And I’m happiest with them.
I changed my dreams because the feeling and emotion I was always seeking – was love. And I have that. I write romances to help spread love.
Where would I have been without the books I’d read growing up? I’m not sure.
But we’re all seeking that feeling of finding someone who loves us no matter what, loves us for who we are – not who we can change to be – and I think that’s the sensation – the emotion – that drives us.
It drove me.
